A listing of officially sanctioned 'non-campsite' overnight parking stopovers for campervans and motorhomes in the UK.

Includes motorhome service points offering CDP (toilet or 'black' waste disposal), and/or 'grey' waste water disposal and fresh water supply.
These are the closest thing the UK has to the motorhome Aires found in many countries in mainland Europe, however they are (mostly) not equivalent. They are not campsites either, most of the car and lorry parks listed have no specific motorhome parking places and or facilities, they are simply the ones we understand to have no regulations prohibiting overnight sleeping, eating and cooking. A few do have specific motorhome parking facilities, this is mentioned in the listing.
We don't include sites that accept towed caravans and/or tents unless there is a SEPARATE designated area for motorhomes or campervans.
What are the rules at these locations?
Often no external 'camping' activity (i.e. setting up tables, chairs, barbecues, awnings etc.) is allowed, and certainly not if the site is a car park. If the site is privately owned it is at the discretion of the site owner.
What do we mean by 'officially sanctioned'?
The UK has legislation that determines what is legally required in order to allow caravans, campervans and motorhomes to be used for 'human habitation' on land. This is covered in some detail on our Stopover Setup page.
Unlike many online listings of UK Aires, or overnight parking and stopovers for motorhomes and campervans we aim to only include places that comply with any of the following:
1) Has a caravan site licence and planning permission.
2) Is local authority owned, occupied or controlled and therefore exempted from the site licence requirement.
3) Has an Exemption Certificate issued by an approved organisation, which allows the stationing of up to 5 units without the need for a site licence or planning permission.
4) Has an agreement with the local authority that the site may operate outwith licensing and planning requirements.

Pubs please note: We get many requests from pubs to be added to our listings, we cannot add them unless they have an Exemption Certificate or have a local authority licence or agreement to accept overnight stays by motorhomes.

Nightstop Scheme
Stopovers marked with the Nightstop Scheme logo are part of a joint scheme run by Practical Motorhome magazine and The Motor Caravanners' Club. They are officially licenced as 5 van sites, but are open to all (no club membership required), most have toilet disposal and fresh water available. The Nightstop locations are included with the kind permission of Practical Motorhome Magazine.

The locations marked with this sign have campervan and motorhome service facilities. This can be a fresh water supply and/or the disposal of black and/or grey waste water. The black water disposal facility may in some cases only be suitable for portable toilets. Electricity may also be available. See the description for details of the facilities available. The facilities may in some cases only be available to those staying at the site. In some cases there may not be a stopover provision at the same location.

The locations marked with this sign have dedicated motorhome/campervan spaces or areas marked, or are reserved for motorhome parking only. There may be a separate charge for daytime or overnight parking, check the local signage for details of charges and restrictions.
Sites sourced by CAMpRA
These sites have been assisted by CAMpRA to obtain Exemption Certificates. CAMpRA has designated them as Aires.
Several local authority car parks are included in this listing. Some are officially authorised for motorhome and campervan overnight stays, some are understood to have no prohibition on sleeping in vehicles.
Users need to be aware that camping/leisure activities, such as putting awnings out, setting up chairs, tables etc, having barbecues, hanging out washing etc. MUST NOT be carried out on car parks. Neither must waste water be allowed to drain onto the ground or emptied down rainwater drains. Rubbish must be taken away with you unless there are dedicated bins.
Users disregarding the above risk having motorhome and campervan overnight stays prohibited.

On 1st March 2017 new byelaws were introduced to manage the environmental impact of camping on some of the busiest lochshores in the National Park. These byelaws will affect those wanting to stay on and around some lochshores during the summer season in the National Park, whether they are in a tent, motorhome, campervan or caravan.
From March to September staying overnight with motorhomes or campervans will only be allowed in specific locations by booking a campsite place or by obtaining a camping or motorhome permit. The cost of the permit will be £3 per motorhome/campervan per night, campsites are £7 per night. A motorhome permit will assign the permit holder to a specific location and numbered parking bay. The maximum stay in one permit area is three consecutive nights.

There are currently six Trust camping spots on community owned land on the West Coast of the Isle of Harris, located in Losgaintir (Luskentyre), Seilebost (Shelibost) and Sgarasta Mhor (Scaristavore). These spots offer fantastic views and are marked with a small sign. They accept tents, caravans and campervans, with sea views and some within a few feet of sandy beaches. £5 a night payable via the website.

Go into Brecon from the east on the B4601, just before the town centre turn right at the mini roundabout, signed for car park. Car park is left at the next mini roundabout. Tourist information, toilets, cafes, pubs, post office, shops and banks all around 5 mins walk in town centre.

Go into Brecon from the west on the B4610, cross the river bridge then immediately turn left in to Watergate. In around a third of a mile bear left into Fenni Fach Road (narrow road!), signed for The Promendade, the car park is on the left in around a quarter of a mile. It's around a five minute walk along the riverside footpath to the town.
About 200 yards further on, there is another smaller car park with access to a big grass parking area. Overnight parking is permitted here as well. There is a barrier, preventing access to the grass, which is closed between Sept and March and also in summer if the weather is bad.

Height barriers at both car parks are normally open, but are closed in early July until the end of July because of the Royal Welsh Show.
Entry to Smithfield car park is from either Brecon Road (opposite the entry to the Co-Op) or from Smithfield Road. Smithfield car park is sloping and is the parking area for the livestock market, it would be worthwhile parking well away from the auction sheds to avoid the possibility of a very early wake-up.

Unofficial stopovers
There are several listings of unofficial places to stop overnight to be found on the internet. We no longer give direct links to any of the listings because the thoughtless actions of some motorhome users has meant that some places listed are no longer usable. A Google search for 'motorhome stopovers' or 'motorhome wild camping' will produce some results, but use them at your own risk.
Motorhome Daytime Parking
Many local authorities, tourist attractions and shopping facilities now include information about motorhome parking on their websites. As a part of planning a visit it is worthwhile investigating such online resources for details. Even if not included on the relevant website most have a contact facility and should respond to parking enquiries.
