Motorhome Stopovers in the UK and Ireland
This is our listing of officially approved (non-campsite) overnight stops,
and service points.
These are the closest thing the UK has to the motorhome 'aires'
found in many countries in mainland Europe, however they are not equivalent. Most of the car and lorry parks listed have no specific motorhome parking places and or facilities, they are simply the ones we understand to have no regulations prohibiting overnight sleeping, eating and cooking. Add a new Stopover
Please send us information about new stopovers,
they must be officially approved - photograph any signs or let us know the owners/local
council details so that we can contact them. Please use our contact
form

GPS Co-ordinates
GPS coordinates are given as degrees and decimal minutes, we will be gradually adding the co-ordinates as decimal degrees in brackets to help those whose sat nav devices only accept this format. If your sat nav needs a different format try this online converter: http://boulter.com/gps/
Coordinates have been verified with Google Maps but note that the marker may not be at a routable location for some sat navs, this may result in the sat nav's 'best guess' for the destination being inaccurate. If possible please check your sat nav's destination against the Google Map link!
Feedback
We encourage anyone using official motorhome stopovers to mention the facility
when patronising local businesses, and if appropriate, write/email to the local
council, thanking them for providing the service.
Prices, where given, are the latest ones reported to us, they may not be up
to date.

Nightstop Scheme
Stopovers marked with the Nightstop Scheme logo are part of a joint scheme run by Practical Motorhome magazine and The Motor Caravanners' Club. They are officially licenced as 5 van sites, but are open to all (no club membership required), most have toilet disposal and fresh water available.
Motorhome Service Points
The stopovers marked with this sign all have Euro Relais style motorhome service points, or other specific facilities, for supplying fresh water and the disposal of black and grey waste water, electricity may also be available - see description. These facilities may in some cases only be available to those staying at the site.
In addition to this listing, The Motor Caravanner's Club CL network is open to non-members. Many are on farms but there are some at pubs and social clubs. Find their listing on the Club website.

Disclaimer:
Local authorities may change the regulations that apply to overnight parking, and users of any of the places listed should ascertain in advance, or on arrival, whether overnight parking, sleeping, or cooking is currently permitted.
Whilst we endeavour, as far as possible, to keep this listing of places allowing overnight stays by motorhomes
up to date, we will not be liable for any errors, omissions, or changes of local authority policy. If you do discover any errors or changes please let us know.
The inclusion of a location in this listing does not imply any recommendation by us and no locations have been inspected by us, users must judge for themselves the suitability, safety and security of any of the places listed.
Several lorry parks are included in the listing, these may not be located in the most attractive surroundings or be the most restful places to park overnight!
It should be noted that stopovers are, in general, NOT a substitute for campsites, they normally do
not have the facilities or security of a campsite and are usually only intended
for short stays, either as an overnight stop on a long journey, or as a base
for a short visit to the local community and to make use of local facilities.
They are for self-contained motorhomes only, and generally you should not put anything
outside the vehicle - no chairs, tables, barbecue etc. It should go without
saying that waste water must NOT be dumped on the ground, or put down surface
water drains. Many of these sites do not have disposal facilities, so rubbish,
waste water and toilet disposal may need to be done at an alternative location.
Camping & Caravanning Club Motorhome Stopoff facility
The Camping and Caravanning Club have a facility at some of their sites for
motorhomes to fill up with water, empty black and grey waste, and make use of all on-site facilities,
for up to 3 hours, for a fee of £6.60.
The Club website has a list of the sites offering this facility here.
Unofficial stopovers
There are several listings of unofficial places to stop overnight to be found
on the internet. We no longer give direct links to any of the listings because
the thoughtless actions of some motorhome users has meant that some places listed
are no longer usable. A Google search for 'motorhome stopovers' or 'motorhome
wild camping' will produce some results, but use them at your own risk.
Motorhome Parking
Details of car parks suitable for motorhomes can be found at www.motorhomeparking.co.uk
This is a very useful site which includes details of car parks where overnight
parking is permitted, but even where parking overnight
is permitted, local parking regulations may prohibit 'camping', cooking, eating, or sleeping in vehicles. |
