How Katie Pulled Boris recounts Keith & Gail Mashiter's experiences buying
an American motorhome (Katie) and then taking a six month trip in it through
France and Spain, towing a Mercedes A Class car (Boris) behind them.
For those of us used to touring in a 'compact' motorhome, Keith
gives us an insight into how very different life is when touring in a large
RV. That daily use of a hairdryer can be a necessity, rather than an unhoped
for luxury (although sometimes dreamed of, by the ladies amongst us!), is
amazing to discover!
After describing the trials and tribulations of buying the motorhome and obtaining
the required HGV licence to actually drive it, the book gives a travelogue
style account of the places they visited and people they met on the route
- some of the locations would not be easily reached by motorhomers without
a separate car (unless they were very energetic on their push bikes!). This
emphasises what appears to be both a positive and a negative aspect of Keiths
travelling arrangements they have the ability to sightsee without any
size restrictions in Boris, but are limited to parking Katie on campsites
with adequate provision for their size. This means they have to return to
the campsite each night and many motorhomers like the opportunity to
park up each night wherever they happen to be (if possible, to wake up on
the beach or next to the sea in the morning!)
If you fancy the lifestyle and are thinking of investing in a big RV, Keith's
account will give you an idea of some of the practical issues involved in
touring with an RV in the knowledge that Keith and Gail have experienced
these things first hand. Bear in mind however that the book is not a guide
to buying and using an American motorhome and that the vast majority of motorhomes
in Europe are a good deal smaller than Katie!
