The 2007 edition of CamperStop Europe is a directory of places throughout
Europe where motorhomes may park, stay overnight or fill up fresh water and
empty waste water & toilets. Local tourist information for most locations
is also included. It has 7000 listings covering UK, Netherlands, Belgium,
Luxembourg, France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Austria,
Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Greece.
This is the second edition of its multilingual format, entries are in English,
German, French & Italian. The layout is much improved over the first edition
with effective use of colour to identify individual country sections and many
colour photos. A two-column page layout also improves readability. A welcome
addition, for those with sat-nav, is the inclusion of latitude and longitude
for every entry, the publishers also offer this gps data as a download from
their website here.
Maps at the beginning of the guide identify the type of stopover and the town
name, they can then be looked up in the alphabetical index at the rear of
the publication to find the relevant page number for the details of the stopover.
The maps are also improved over the previous edition, with a lighter background
and the addition of city and region names. We'd like to see major route numbers
included too, curiously they are marked on the Denmark, Slovenia and Croatia
maps, but none of the others.
The book would be a useful purchase for the first timer abroad and the motorhomer
who doesn't want to purchase individual country guides, and of course for
those travelling to countries where no local guide to camperstops exists.
There is a lot of info in the book but, as in the previous edition we feel
that the majority of the tourist info could be left out and better directions
to, and description of the stop included. After all it's a camperstop guide
and we think it would be sufficient to just list the nearest tourist office
and dispense with the other tourist info. One can usually get all the local
info needed on arrival. We are still surprised to see a few places described
as 'tolerated place' or 'prohibition may apply'. Although it is useful to
hear of such places, users of them need to be aware that the place may be
closed and they may be 'moved on' at any time. There is at least a note about
this in the introduction.
Users should also be aware that this, and other publications of this type,
is a guide and not a "Bible", from personal experience we know that
no guide is a comprehensive listing, places develop and rules and regulations
constantly change. Most publications of this nature are usually a year out
of date since they have to be compiled and sent to press etc. Certainly when
travelling users should never rely on any place being available and always
have a backup plan of 1 or 2 other options.
(When buying the book, make sure that the separate Erratum booklet is included.
It corrects where the index has incorrect page numbers for sites in Germany,
and some UK and French longitudes which are marked as E when they should be
W)
