This is the second edition of the popular English guide to the French motorhome aires.
It is massively updated from the 1st edition and
lists 1600 stopovers for motorhomes - the majority being full Aires de Service with parking, fresh water and waste water disposal. Of these 1600, 1300 have been inspected
by or on behalf of the authors, mostly in 2007 or 2008, and have full details included in the guide,
the remaining 300 are listed with basic information.
The guide has a very useful introduction to the principles of the Aires network in France including handy hints on the use of Aires, and descriptions and operation of the different types of service points to be found.
For the guide, France has been divided into 14 regions which are shown on
an overview map at the start of the book, each region section starts with
a very clear map on which all the listed Aires are indicated and numbered. The sections have the Aires listed 4 to a page, the majority have good colour photos to give a useful idea of the environs.
An example page is shown on the right. As can be seen, each description of
an inspected aire is accompanied by a colour photo and two sets of symbols,
one indicating the service facilities available, the other indicating other
features such as overnight parking, hard surface, level surface, etc. Usefully,
there is a symbol to indicate if access is difficult for large (over 7m) motorhomes.
Clear directions are given, plus a short description which usually includes information about the locality and other services nearby. Charges, opening dates, GPS co-ordinates and postcodes are also shown.
This is a well thought out and comprehensive guide to the 1300 inspected Aires. With the increase in coverage over the last edition it is the most comprehensive and up to date guide to true Aires de service available in any language and must now be an essential purchase for anyone heading to France with their motorhome. Even for those who mainly use campsites it would be a useful addition to the motorhome library, you never know when you might need to make an unplanned stop.
We've checked the details and descriptions of aires that we know and are happy
to report that they are pretty accurate. The publishers include a 'Report
Form' at the back of the guide for readers to send in corrections and updates.
